Joe Biden took a jab at President-elect Donald Trump while speaking in St. Croix on Sunday evening about the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. When a reporter asked what Trump could learn from Carter, Biden smiled and repeated the word “decency” three times. He then made a brief comparison between Carter and Trump, emphasizing Carter’s kindness and values.

The reporter’s question, partly drowned out by background noise, was: “Is there anything President Trump could take from President Carter?”

Biden responded:
“Decency. Decency. Decency. Everyone deserves a chance. Can you imagine Jimmy Carter ignoring someone in need? Can you imagine him judging someone by their appearance or speech? I can’t. Carter embodied the values we, as Americans, stand for. The world looked to him as a leader worth admiring. Thank you.”

This remark came after Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance issued statements praising Carter.

Vance said:
“Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to serving this country. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his loved ones. May he rest in peace.”

Trump’s initial statement read:
“I just heard the news of President Jimmy Carter’s passing. As Presidents, we share a unique bond, understanding the immense responsibility of leading this great nation. Carter faced significant challenges during a critical time for our country and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Americans. For that, we owe him our gratitude. Melania and I send our condolences to the Carter family during this difficult time. Please keep them in your prayers.”

Trump followed up with another message:
“President Jimmy Carter has passed away at 100. While we had philosophical and political differences, I respected his love for our country and his efforts to make it better. He was a good man and will be deeply missed. After his presidency, he remained highly influential and impactful. Warmest condolences from Melania and me to his family.”
