What is AfDB-JADS?
The AfDB-Japan Africa Dream Scholarship is a collaborative initiative between the African Development Bank and the Government of Japan. This program is designed to build human resource capacity in Africa by supporting graduate studies in fields crucial to Africa’s development.
The scholarship aligns with the African Development Bank’s High 5 priorities, which include:
- Feed Africa
- Light up and power Africa
- Industrialise Africa
- Integrate Africa
- Improve the quality of life for the people of Africa
These priorities are also in line with Japanese development assistance goals, focusing on sustainable growth and human resource development in Africa.
Award Details
What Does the Scholarship Cover?
The AfDB-JADS provides a comprehensive support package, including:
- Full Tuition: Covers all tuition fees for the duration of the program.
- Monthly Stipend: 140,000 JPY (approximately 900 EUR) for living expenses, subject to change.
- Travel Expenses: Economy class air travel to and from APU (Asia Pacific University) at the beginning and end of the program.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the AfDB-Japan Africa Dream Scholarship, you must:
- Be a citizen of an AfDB member country.
- Be 35 years old or younger.
- Hold a bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as energy, agriculture, health, environmental sustainability, or engineering.
- Have excellent academic records and relevant professional experience.
- Have at least one year of paid work experience in your home country or other African nations within the past three years.
- Be residing and working in your home country.
- Not be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.
- Not be an Executive Director, their alternate, or staff of the African Development Bank Group, or a close relative of these individuals.
- Agree to return to your home country after completing the program to contribute to its development.

Application Process
Applications for the AfDB-Japan Africa Dream Scholarship should be submitted through the APU Online Application.
- Application Deadlines:
- 16th September 2024 for April 2025 enrollment
- 10th January 2025 for September 2025 enrollment
No separate application form or additional documents are required specifically for the scholarship. Ensure to apply by the deadlines for your intended start date.
