Labour’s Plan to Stop the Boats Migrants Has Two Major Flaws – Here’s Why It Won’t Work

23views

Migrants have been seen arriving in the UK. Many of them travel across the Channel in small boats controlled by criminal gangs.

People from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, and Sudan have shared heartbreaking stories about these smugglers. The gangs abuse them, both physically and sexually, and threaten them with violence or even death if they refuse to obey.

Because of this, it is frustrating that the Government’s new laws may not work as planned.

Why the New Laws Might Not Work

  1. Punishing the Wrong People
The Government plans to arrest those in the boats, but these people are victims, not criminals. The real smugglers never get on the boats. They stay on shore, armed with weapons, and force scared refugees onto overcrowded, unsafe boats.
  2. Fighting the Gangs Properly
It is important to catch and imprison the leaders of these smuggling gangs. But to truly stop them, we must reduce the number of refugees who feel forced to use smugglers. One solution is to create a humanitarian visa, which would allow refugees to apply for asylum legally before coming to the UK. This would give the UK control over who can enter while stopping people from risking their lives in dangerous boats. Not all applicants would be allowed in, but those found to be genuine refugees would be given safety and support to settle in the UK.

A Better Plan is Needed

The Government is right to want to stop the smuggling gangs, but their current approach needs improvement. The best way to fight these criminals is to take away their source of money—by offering refugees a safe, legal way to seek asylum.

This would protect vulnerable people and make it harder for smugglers to exploit them for profit.
