King Charles and Prince Andrew are arguing over the future of Royal Lodge, a large 30-room house on the Windsor Estate.
The King has stopped providing money for its upkeep, and he wants Andrew to move to Frogmore Cottage, a smaller home that used to belong to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
However, Prince Andrew has a 75-year lease on Royal Lodge, which he signed in 2003. Under this agreement, he is responsible for paying for its maintenance.
Andrew stepped down from royal duties in 2019 after his links to Jeffrey Epstein caused controversy. The following year, King Charles cut off his annual £1 million allowance and stopped funding his security.
Many people wondered how Andrew would afford to stay at Royal Lodge, but he managed to find private funding from unknown sources to cover his costs.
Why Does King Charles Want Andrew to Move?
Frogmore Cottage would be cheaper to maintain and is located within the Windsor Castle security area, making it safer. Some royal experts believe King Charles does not want to be seen spending public money on his brother, especially after Andrew’s controversies.
Matt Wilkinson, a royal editor, explained on Channel 5’s documentary that Charles doesn’t like Andrew living a luxurious life while relying on royal funds. By stopping financial support, Charles is putting pressure on Andrew to pay for his lifestyle himself.
What Will Happen to Royal Lodge?
It’s unclear why Charles wants Andrew to leave, but there are different theories:
- Some reports suggest Queen Camilla could move there if Charles passes away before her.
- Others say it could be given to Prince Edward and Princess Sophie, who play a bigger role in the royal family.
- Another possibility is that the house might be rented out privately to bring in more money for the Crown Estate, possibly earning up to £1 million a month.
Royal expert Emily Andrews believes that if Andrew moves out, the property will likely be rented out to generate income for the royal family.
