Notorious Prisoner Shouts ‘Death to Non-Believers’ Before Brutal Attack on Guard in London

A dangerous prisoner attacked a prison officer at HMP Belmarsh in London, using a homemade weapon and shouting hateful words, according to court documents. The attack happened on October 23, 2022, at around 2:40 am, injuring staff members and damaging property.

The prisoner, 38-year-old Aklakar Rahman, was let out of his cell for lunch when he suddenly attacked an officer. Rahman, who is already serving a life sentence for violent crimes, stabbed a female officer in the head and throat with a sharpened plastic spoon. He also threw a bin at her and two other prison staff, making the situation worse.

According to the incident report, Rahman shouted offensive remarks during the attack. Even after being restrained, he kept struggling and trying to fight back. Prosecutor Justin Hayhoe said Rahman was the main person leading the attack and telling another prisoner what to do.

CCTV footage showed Rahman banging on the officer’s door, kicking it, and shouting. When he saw the camera, he turned it away but was still partly recorded. At one point, he left briefly and returned with a Jerry can of diesel from his van. He was seen cutting a hosepipe and trying to pour diesel through the letterbox, but thankfully, none got inside.

When the police arrived, Rahman was found outside smoking a cigarette. The officer he attacked was a young woman in her 20s. She had cuts on the back of her head and minor injuries on her neck. The attack also caused £4,000 worth of property damage, and the officer had to be taken to the hospital.

During his trial at the Old Bailey, Rahman admitted to five charges of attempted wounding and was found guilty of four more serious charges of attempted murder. He also confessed to six attempted assaults on emergency workers and having three sharpened plastic weapons in prison.

His defense lawyer, Ian Metcalfe, argued that Rahman did not mean to seriously harm anyone. He also pointed out that Rahman was drunk and struggling with mental health problems at the time. However, due to his history of violence, the jury took his crimes very seriously.

Prosecutor Alistair Richardson described Rahman as a “highly dangerous man” who posed a serious threat to prison staff and others around him.

During sentencing, Judge Michael Blakey criticized Rahman’s actions, saying he clearly had problems with alcohol and a bad temper. Because of his actions, Rahman was given two more years in prison.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed that two prison officers were injured in the attack, with one needing hospital treatment. The incident was part of over 200 violent attacks at HMP Belmarsh between November 2021 and October 2022, showing the ongoing security problems at the high-security prison.

A spokesperson for the Prison Service said they are working to keep staff safe and have invested £125 million in prison security. They also said more improvements are needed to prevent such violent attacks in the future.

Rahman’s attack highlights the serious dangers prison officers face and the importance of strong security in prisons.
