It might sound unbelievable, but all dogs, from tiny Chihuahuas to long-eared Basset Hounds, are distant relatives of wolves. Over thousands of years, humans have bred and shaped them into the unique dog breeds we see today. Dogs are beloved companions for many of us, and Hayden felt the same way about her dog, Jackson.

One afternoon, Hayden came home to something unusual. She noticed strange marks on Jackson’s skin that immediately caught her attention. At first, she wasn’t sure what they were, but they didn’t look normal. Concerned, she decided to take a closer look. As she examined Jackson more carefully, her worry grew. These marks didn’t seem like regular bug bites or scrapes, so she made the decision to take him to the vet to figure out what was going on.

By the time they got to the vet’s office, Hayden’s mind was racing with possibilities. Maybe the marks were bug bites? After all, dogs can get them all the time. But as the vet examined Jackson, the situation turned out to be far worse than Hayden could have imagined. The strange marks on Jackson’s skin weren’t bug bites or scratches. Instead, they were tiny holes—holes that looked like they had been made by something sharp or fast-moving. And there wasn’t just one or two; there were many.

Hayden’s heart sank. The vet began carefully shaving away Jackson’s fur to examine the wounds more closely. What they discovered was horrifying. Jackson had been shot—multiple times. Tiny pellets and BBs were embedded all over his body. In total, the vet found 20 pellets and 7 BBs lodged deep in Jackson’s flesh. It was a devastating revelation.

But the shock didn’t end there. As the vet explained, these weren’t the only injuries. An additional 20 pellets had struck Jackson but bounced off his body, leaving painful bruises. This meant that Jackson had been shot at least 60 times in total. Hayden was overwhelmed with disbelief and sorrow.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” Hayden later shared. “Who would do something so cruel to a defenseless dog?”

The discovery left Hayden heartbroken and horrified. She had thought Jackson’s wounds were minor, but they turned out to be evidence of an unspeakable act of cruelty. Determined to get justice for her beloved dog, she contacted the police.

When the police arrived, they were equally horrified. They investigated the area and found BBs lodged in a nearby tree, tracing the shots back to a neighboring house. The home belonged to a 44-year-old man named Tim. With a search warrant in hand, the police entered Tim’s house. Inside, they found a BB gun, pellets, and drug paraphernalia, including methamphetamine. Tim was arrested on drug charges while the police waited for tests to confirm whether the BB gun and pellets found at his house matched the ones used on Jackson. If they did, Tim would face serious animal cruelty charges.

Despite the trauma Jackson endured, there was some good news. The vet confirmed that Jackson was expected to recover fully, even though some of the pellets and BBs couldn’t be safely removed. Hayden was relieved that Jackson would heal physically, but the emotional scars of what had happened would take longer to fade.

The story of Jackson’s ordeal spread quickly, and many people were outraged by the cruelty he had faced. Hayden hoped that justice would be served, not just for Jackson but to send a message that such acts of violence against animals would not be tolerated.

For now, Hayden focused on helping Jackson heal, giving him the love and care he needed to recover from the terrible experience. The hope was that brighter days lay ahead for both of them, and that Jackson’s story would inspire others to stand against animal cruelty.
