Older drivers have been warned by a top car expert about potential safety risks.
A well-known mechanic, Scotty Kilmer, has advised some older motorists to stop driving due to safety concerns. He explained that some elderly drivers could be a danger to themselves and others.
Scotty said that older drivers who frequently have accidents or “run into things” should consider giving up their licenses for their own safety. He shared this advice while discussing a 2019 Lincoln MKT he was repairing for a customer. The car used to belong to an elderly person before being sold.
Scotty shared an example of a family taking their elderly relative’s car away because it was no longer safe for him to drive. He said on YouTube: “The man’s daughter had to step in and take the car because he couldn’t drive safely anymore. Eventually, everyone reaches a point where they may need to stop driving, even if it’s frustrating.”
In the UK, there’s no fixed age when people must stop driving. Older drivers can keep driving as long as they are healthy and safe behind the wheel. However, licenses must be renewed at age 70 and every three years after that.
The DVLA can revoke a license if it’s deemed unsafe for someone to drive, but drivers can also choose to give up their license voluntarily, especially if a doctor advises them to. This voluntary surrender makes it easier to reapply for a license in the future if needed.
Age UK emphasizes that older drivers can continue driving as long as they can do so safely and without medical conditions that impair their ability.
