84-Year-Old Pelosi Breaks Hip After Nasty Fall Down the Stairs in Luxembourg

Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, 84, suffered a serious injury after falling down some stairs earlier today.

The injury, which has now been confirmed as a fractured hip, could have significant health consequences, especially given her age.

Pelosi was in Luxembourg as part of a bipartisan Congressional delegation marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, a key event in World War II history.

During her visit, she fell and had to be hospitalized. Initially, reports claimed her injuries were minor, but The New York Times later confirmed she had fractured her hip, requiring medical attention.

Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, explained that she is receiving excellent care in Luxembourg. Although she remains able to work, she will not attend the rest of the events on the trip. He released a statement saying:

.
“While in Luxembourg to honor the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation. She is receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals. She regrets being unable to attend the remaining events and expresses her gratitude to the veterans and the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their roles in World War II and in bringing peace to Europe.”

Krager added that Pelosi was deeply honored to join this trip, especially as her own uncle, Johnny, served in World War II. She hopes to return to the United States soon.

However, the situation may be more serious than initially reported. Doctors believe her hip fracture can be repaired with routine surgery, but it is not yet clear whether this operation will take place in Luxembourg or in the U.S. Hip fractures can be particularly dangerous for older adults, as they often lead to complications during recovery.

People close to Pelosi, speaking anonymously, said doctors are confident about the surgery but acknowledged the potential risks for someone her age. Hip injuries can limit mobility and require extensive rehabilitation, which can be challenging for elderly individuals.

The fall has sparked concern among many who admire Pelosi’s long career in public service. She was in Luxembourg to honor the sacrifices of American soldiers during World War II and was traveling with a group of lawmakers, including some with family ties to the war. Pelosi’s commitment to her duties, even after her injury, shows her dedication, but her health will now require careful attention as she recovers.
